A national network of law enforcement trainers has developed and implemented a training program in victim assistance for law enforcement personnel.
Abstract
The goal of this 15-month project was to implement in all 50 States a training program for 4 types of law enforcement personnel: the recruits and first responders, the specialized investigators, the law enforcement managers, and the law enforcement trainers. The training curriculum includes both core and elective modules. The curriculum covers crisis theory, crisis intervention, interviewing techniques, crime scene search practices, methods for making referrals, legal requirements relating to victim services, media relations, community networking, planning and operation of a victim program, and other topics. Modules relate to general victimology, homicide investigation, child physical abuse and neglect, family violence, rape, child sexual assault, and victimization of the elderly. Details are presented on each step in the project, the development of each curriculum element and its printed materials, the project staff, and the project cost. Appended list of members of the certification review panel and the victim assistance training standard and resolution.
