This book is a collection of tips, strategies, and activities designed to address and ameliorate the multifaceted problem of bullying in schools.
Abstract
The book might be used to complement or supplement a program already in place, to take action in the absence of a program, or to plan and develop a program that meets the unique needs of a particular classroom or school. Because the book spans a broad range of grades (K-8), not all activities are appropriate for all classrooms. The section on "Creating a Positive Classroom" features tips, strategies, and techniques designed to change everyone's attitudes and behaviors for the better. Suggestions include teaching anger-management skills, responding effectively to reports of bullying, intervening immediately when bullying is witnessed, teaching friendship skills, building empathy, and teaching assertiveness skills. The section on "Helping Victims" focuses on students who are current or potential victims of bullying. Strategies include being a good listener, mobilizing witnesses, encouraging positive attitudes, building students' self-esteem, helping students accept their differences, providing safe havens, and equalizing power. The section on "Helping Bullies" is designed to help students who delight in tormenting other students. Suggestions include not bullying the bully, having clear consequences in place, changing bullies' thinking, getting parents together, keeping the focus on behavior, counseling, and setting up a bully court. Reproducible pages are included, along with resources that include books for adults and children, videos, organizations, and web sites. A subject index
