Researchers analyzed glycated hemoglobin (GHb), fructosamine, and glycated albumin (GA) in hemolytic sera from cadavers to make postmortem diagnoses of diabetes mellitus.
Abstract
The levels of GHb and fructosamine were determined by boronate chromatography and colorimetry, respectively. Albumin fraction was isolated using the trademarked Affi-Gel Blue affinity chromatography. Glycated and non-glycated molecules were separated by boronate affinity chromatography, and quantitated by bromcresol green method. Fructosamine could not be analyzed from highly hemolytic sera exceeding 10 g/1 hemoglobin. In these samples, the levels of GHb and GA deviated from their standard values, demonstrating postmortem degradation. In less hemolytic samples, GA was as informative as GHb and fructosamine in identifying diabetes mellitus. 5 figures, 2 tables, and 23 notes
