Abstract
In achieving its goal of providing excellence in professional development, the American Correctional Association (ACA) has designed and developed the following educational and training opportunities in the field of corrections: (1) E-learning, offered through the Online Corrections Academy (OCA) is a solution in training correctional officers in mental health issues in the most cost-effective and efficient way; (2) “Supervising Offenders with Mental Illness,” provides correctional officers with the skills they need to supervise these challenging offenders safely and effectively; (3) Leadership Development for the Corrections Professional (LDCP) program addresses the changing nature of leadership and prepares leaders for challenges ahead; (4) the Correctional Certification Program designed by ACA establishes a standard of excellence, as well as increases the credibility of corrections, promoting leadership; (5) Continuing Education Units (CEUs), offered through a partnership with the University of Maryland, is a nationally recognized standard unit of measurement that is awarded on the basis of participation in an organized continuing education program; and (6) the Healthcare Professional Interest Section (H-PIS), a membership subgroup of ACA focusing on emerging and relevant health care issues for correctional health care practitioners. ACA’s training programs offered through the Professional Development Department are viewed as the solution to correctional agencies’ training need for the 21 century workforce.
