In April of 2007, Los Angeles announced the launch of an anti-gang initiative modeled on the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s (OJJDP’s) Gang Reduction Program (GRP). Key concepts of the GRP model include identifying the needs of individual, family, and community level and address those needs with a coordinated and comprehensive response, conduct an inventory of human and financial resources in the community to support effective gang reduction strategies, apply research-based programs, and encourage coordination and integration of resources at the local, State, and Federal levels. OJJDP’s 2007 national disproportionate minority (DMC) conference, “Reducing Disproportionate Minority Contact in Juvenile Justice by Making the Right Connections” was held in Denver, CO. The conference provides State and local professionals with strategies to make the right connections in their DMC reduction efforts. In September 2007, the American Bar Association conducted the National Law-Related Education (LRE) Leadership Conference in New Orleans, LA. In October 2007, OJJDP in connection with the Hamilton Fish Institute will host a national conference on Safe Schools and Communities. Conference highlights are presented on the September 2007 conference on juvenile probation and justice management issues by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. News highlights from the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention are presented about the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 4-H Program and its relationship with the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. News on upcoming Federal Advisory Committee meetings related to juvenile justice issues is presented. The Committee advises the U.S. President and Congress on matters related to juvenile justice and evaluates the progress and accomplishments of juvenile justice activities and projects.
