The report offers a blueprint which explains how NIJ will move forward as the premier Federal science agency focusing on the research, development, and evaluation of crime and justice topics. It also provides the new Director an opportunity to leverage communication of his 10-point vision for NIJ. This National Research Council report presented five important recommendations that speak to the continued improvement and growth of the NIJ: the need for independence and self-governance at NIJ, the critical elements essential for a science agency that NIJ purports to be, the need for NIJ to bolster the research infrastructure internally and externally, the need for NIJ to embrace scientific integrity and transparency in all of its activities, and the need for NIJ to embrace a culture of self-assessment. NIJ has concurred with these recommendations and has enacted new policies and procedures that respond to the changes called for in the report. Appendix and reference
