This article profiles various specialized police operations, including the New York City Transit Police, San Francisco's BART police, Amtrak police, airport police, campus police, and U.S. Park Police.
Abstract
The profile of the NYPD Transit Police includes a brief review of its history, its jurisdiction, and its responsibilities. The types of crimes with which the transit police typically deal are also identified. The history and personnel of San Francisco's BART Police are also described, along with the particular laws applicable to the jurisdiction of the BART Police, such as not smoking on any BART property and no food or drink inside a paid area. BART Police also have jurisdiction over the BART parking lots for commuters. The highest crime rate under BART's jurisdiction involves theft and burglary in these lots. Amtrak Police personnel are profiled, along with their responsibilities, which include patrolling the railroad right-of-way and railway stations. Amtrak officers must be schooled in Federal laws and procedures, since Amtrak is a Federal agency. Airport security is described for the Denver International Airport and the Los Angeles International Airport. Campus policing is described for Texas A&M University in College Station. Officer training and responsibilities are discussed. The article concludes with an overview of the history and current staffing and responsibilities of the U.S. Park Police.
