This handbook presents a general overview of Wyoming laws that relate to crime victims and witnesses and reflects a consensus of viewpoints from the perspectives of crime victims, criminal justice system personnel, and crime victim service providers.
Abstract
The handbook takes crime victims and witnesses through the criminal justice process. Consideration is given to victim crime reporting, prosecution, offender arrest, the preliminary hearing, arraignment, the pretrial conference, trial, sentencing, and evidence. Steps in both misdemeanor and felony cases are detailed. The handbook also covers Wyoming's Victims Bill of Rights, the Victim Notification Program, criminal proceedings involving minors, civil lawsuits, restitution, the role of victims and witnesses in probation and parole, Wyoming's Crime Victims Compensation Commission (CVCC), Federal victims and witnesses, and public and private assistance available to victims. The importance of communication between victims and agencies (police and sheriff departments, prosecuting attorneys, judges, the CVCC, and the Division of Probation and Parole) is stressed. A glossary of legal terms is included. 2 figures
