After a brief study description, this codebook presents the questionnaire and coding used for a data set resulting from a study of pretrial publicity.
Abstract
Data came from 600 mail questionnaires sent in 1970 to newspaper editors, police chiefs, prosecuting attorneys, and defense attorneys from a sample of 166 cities across the country. of 166 cities across the country. The questions focused on the degree of pretrial press publicity on pending criminal cases; relevant attitudes, especially concerning ways of reducing the adverse effects of pretrial publicity while still informing the public; and prevailing procedures by editors, police, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges.
