A manual was developed by the Greenville County Sheriff's Department (South Carolina) for field training of new recruits.
Abstract
The manual was developed as a formal training standard for the field training program established in 1978. Program and manual objectives are to orient recruits to actual field duties, to reduce the time required for recruits to become independent, to standardize field indoctrination, to facilitate monitoring of recruits' progress, and to ensure recruits' adequate preparation for their responsibilities. New recruits with no prior experience are expected to complete the manual within 1 year; experienced recruits, within 6 months. Through the manual, the department can maintain a permanent record of information and skill requirements met by recruits, as instructors sign off on each task for each recruit. The manual covers a wide range of subjects, including basics (such as a tour of facilities), rules and regulations, and various forms. The manual also discusses police control, desk operations, county vehicles, patrol tactics, crime investigations, the mechanics of arrest, pursuit and deadly force, and courtroom presentations. A sample of the affidavit of completion is supplied.
