THIS MANUAL CONTAINS INFORMATION ON POLICIES AND PROCEDURES IN CORRECTIONAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS FOR MANAGERS OF HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS IN STATE PRISONS.
Abstract
IT DISCUSSES THE NATURE AND FUNCTIONS OF POLICIES AND PROCEDURES IN ORGANIZATIONS, THE VARIOUS FORMS THEY MAY TAKE, THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER RULES AND REGULATIONS, AND THEIR ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES. IT ALSO OUTLINES THE PROCESSES REQUIRED TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, AS WELL AS THE FORMATS AND STYLES OF WRITTEN POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. SAMPLES OF ACTUAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES ARE ALSO PROVIDED, AND AN OUTLINE OF A MODEL POLICY MANUAL FOR CORRECTIONAL HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SCOPE AND CONTENT UNDER SEVERAL TOPIC AREAS (E.G., PERSONNEL, HEALTH CARE SERVICES, SUPPORT SERVICES) ARE PRESENTED. THE MODEL REFLECTS STANDARDS BEING DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION AND THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION. EXPECTATIONS ARE THAT EFFORTS IN POLICY AND PROCEDURES WILL RESULT IN INCREASED EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY OF PROGRAM OPERATIONS, INCREASED MANAGEMENT CONTROL, AND GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF ALL ASPECTS OF THE ORGANIZATION BY PARTICIPATING STAFF. EIGHT REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
