SIX ARTICLES REPRESENTING A VARIETY OF RESEARCH APPROACHES IN THE FIELD OF VICTIMOLOGY ARE PRESENTED IN A SPECIAL ISSUE OF A PROFESSIONAL JOURNAL FOR SOCIOLOGISTS.
Abstract
INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS ON THE EMERGENCE OF VICTIMOLOGY AS A FIELD OF RESEARCH NOTE TWO REASONS FOR THE GROWING INTEREST IN THE FIELD: (1) ITS ATTRACTION FOR SCHOLARS FROM A BROAD RANGE OF DISCIPLINES; AND (2) THE NEED TO FILL THE GAP IN APPLIED RESEARCH LEFT BY CRIMINOLOGISTS. THE FIRST ARTICLE DISCUSSES PROBLEMS THAT HAVE PREVENTED CRIMINOLOGISTS FROM BECOMING MORE INVOLVED IN STUDYING VICTIMS. AN ANALYSIS OF VICTIMIZATION SURVEY DATA EXPLORES THE IMPACT OF VICTIMIZATION EXPERIENCE ON INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES. DATA FROM TWO CANADIAN PROVINCES ARE ANALYZED IN A STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF VICTIM COMPENSATION PROGRAMS ON CONVICTION RATES. A CROSS-CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF SEX ROLE STEREOTYPES, WOMEN'S LIBERATION, AND RAPE DRAWS ON DATA FROM INTERVIEWS WITH WHITES, BLACKS, AND MEXICAN AMERICANS IN SAN ANTONIO, TEX. ALSO INCLUDED IS A DISCUSSION OF THE DOCTRINE OF SELF-DEFENSE AS IT PERTAINS TO BATTERED WIVES ON TRIAL FOR KILLING THEIR HUSBANDS. THE FINAL ARTICLE EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VICTIMIZATION EXPERIENCE AND ATTITUDES TOWARD PUNISHMENT IN A SUBURBAN COMMUNITY IN HAWAII KNOWN FOR ITS LAW-AND-ORDER ORIENTATION. SUPPORTING DATA AND LISTS OF REFERENCES ACCOMPANY THE ARTICLES. FOR SEPARATE ABSTRACTS OF THE ARTICLES, SEE NCJ 58202-58207. (LKM)
