THE EQUIPMENT AND FUNCTIONS OF THE NEW COMMAND CENTER OF THE PARIS POLICE ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
TO FULFILL ITS TWO MAIN DUTIES--TRAFFIC REGULATION AND THE MAINTENANCE OF PUBLIC ORDER--THE PARIS POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS RECENTLY MOVED INTO A NEW COMMAND CENTER. THE EQUIPMENT PROVIDED WAS INTENDED TO MEET THE IMMEDIATE NEED OF THE INCREASING NUMBER OF OPERATORS AND TO PROVIDE FOR FUTURE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING FOUR NEW SOURCES OF INFORMATION: (1) COMPUTERS CONTAINING THE FUTURE TRAFFIC PLAN FOR PARIS, (2) TERMINALS ATTACHED TO PATROL CARS FROM WHICH OBSERVATIONS CAN BE TRANSMITTED AND WHICH CAN ALSO RECEIVE INFORMATION, (3) A REGIONAL TRAFFIC CENTER WHICH SURVEYS THE ENTIRE ILE DE FRANCE, AND (4) ADDITIONAL TELEVISION EQUIPMENT TO COMPLEMENT THE ALREADY EXISTING NETWORK ON MAJOR HIGHWAYS. THE NEW CENTER COMBINES THREE VITAL FUNCTIONS. FIRST, THE TRAFFIC CONTROL SECTION, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE CENTER, CONTAINS AN ELECTROLUMINESCENT MAP INDICATING THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC (MOVING, HEAVY, VERY HEAVY) ON MOST STREETS OF PARIS. TWO OTHER MAPS ADVISE ON POLICE INTERVENTION IN PARIS AND THE SUBURBS. IN ADDITION, STRATEGICALLY LOCATED TELEVISION CAMERAS DIRECTLY TRANSMIT TRAFFIC INFORMATION. SECOND, AS OF NOW, PUBLIC SAFETY VEHICLES (POLICE CARS, AMBULANCES) ARE COMPUTER CONTROLLED. THIRD, THE COORDINATION CENTER ASSURES THE UNINTERRUPTED FUNCTIONING OF THE MUNICIPAL POLICE FOR 24 HOURS A DAY. THE ARTICLE CONTAINS SEVERAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOWING THE CENTER. --IN FRENCH. (SAJ)
