REPORT ON INITIAL EFFORTS TO CATALOGUE AND VERIFY THE ARGOT USED BY PROFESSIONAL CRIMINALS IN BARCELONA, SPAIN, AND TO ANALYZE THIS SLANG VOCABULARY TO OBTAIN DATA ON THE ATTITUDES AND VALUES OF THE CRIMINAL SUBCULTURE.
Abstract
THIS RESEARCH, BEGUN IN 1969 BY THE INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BARCELONA, SPAIN, WAS BASED ON THE THEORY THAT KNOWLEDGE OF CRIMINAL ARGOT IS AN INDICATOR OF CRIMINAL SOCIALIZATION. PREVIOUS RESEARCH STUDIES IN THIS AREA ARE REVIEWED IN DETAIL. USING PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED VOCABULARIES AS A STARTING, THE RESEARCH TEAM ELIMINATED DATED OR UNUSED TERMS WITH THE HELP AND COOPERATION OF 12 ADULT PROPERTY OFFENDERS. TERMS NOT INCLUDED IN PREVIOUS VOCABULARIES WERE IDENTIFIED THROUGH TAPED DRUG INTERVIEWS WITH A SECOND GROUP OF 24 KNOWN MALE AND FEMALE OFFENDERS. A TOTAL OF 1305 SLANG TERMS WERE IDENTIFIED IN THE WRITTEN QUESTIONNAIRE. ADDITIONAL TERMS WERE CULLED FROM VOCABULARIES PUBLISHED AFTER THOSE USED AS A BASIS FOR THE QUESTIONNAIRE. THE MAJORITY OF THE 720 TERMS NOTED ON THE TAPED INTERVIEWS WERE ALREADY INCLUDED IN THESE TWO PRIOR LISTINGS. REFERENCES AND EXTENSIVE NOTES ARE INCLUDED. --IN SPANISH
