CRITIQUE OF TRADITIONAL CRIMINOLOGY FOR LIMITING ITSELF TO THE STUDY OF CONVENTIONAL FORMS OF CRIMINALITY.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DISTINGUISHES BETWEEN CONVENTIONAL CRIMES (SUCH AS CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS, PROPERTY, MORALS, AND PUBLIC ORDER) AND UNCONVENTIONAL CRIMES. THE LATTER INCLUDES OFFENSES COMMITTED UNDER COVER OF OFFICIAL POSITIONS, CRIMES AGAINST INTERNATIONAL LAWS, POLITICAL CRIMES, TERRORISM, ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL FRAUDS, CORRUPTION, TORTURE, POLICE ABUSES, AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION. THOUGH PROHIBITED BY LAW IN THE MAJORITY OF COUNTRIES, UNCONVENTIONAL CRIMES REMAIN LARGELY UNPUNISHED. BY PLACING EMPHASIS ON THE INDIVIDUAL ELEMENT OF CRIMINALITY, TRADITIONAL CRIMINOLOGY OMITS CONSIDERATION OF UNCONVENTIONAL CRIMES. THE FAILURE TO APPROACH CRIME AS A SOCIOPOLITICAL PHENOMENON OF WHICH BOTH CONVENTIONAL AND UNCONVENTIONAL OFFENSES ARE PART, ACCOUNTS FOR THE FAILURE OF CRIMINOLOGY AS A SCIENCE. A NEW CRIMINOLOGY CALLS FOR A THOROUGH CHANGE IN THEORETICAL ORIENTATION, THE ABANDONMENT OF NEUTRAL POSITIONS, AND A COMPREHENSIVE SOCIOPOLITICAL APPROACH. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) --IN ITALIAN.
