This manual from the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute is intended for use by corrections officers participating in HIV/AIDS training on dealing with inmates with HIV/AIDS.
Abstract
The purpose of this training manual is to increase the awareness of correction officers working in local correctional facilities in their responsibilities for the care, control, and custody of inmates living with HIV/AIDS. This participant manual is intended for use by correction officers and staff who supervise correction officers as they complete the training program. The curriculum in the manual is divided into three modules to enable ease of training for officers and supervisors. Module 1, HIV/AIDS... What Does It Mean To Me?, provides the basics of HIV/AIDS training and by the end of the session, participants should be able to describe concerns regarding HIV infection, state three body fluids and three risk behaviors that can transmit HIV infection, and identify how correction officers can prevent/reduce HIV transmission. Module 2, HIV Confidentiality, discusses the issue of HIV confidentiality and by the end of the session participants should be able to state how stigma associated with HIV/AIDS can negatively affect perceptions and behaviors; and summarize the correction officer's duty regarding detainee/inmates' legal rights to protection, care, and confidentiality. Module 3, Living With HIV/AIDS In Jail, discusses the issues relating to living with HIV/AIDS while in jail and by the end of the session participants should be able to determine at least two health requirements inmates might have living with HIV/AIDS in jail and list the correction officer's duty in safeguarding inmates' health rights.
