This article discusses security procedures at the American University in Bulgaria.
Abstract
The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) was established in 1991 as a joint initiative of the Republic of Bulgaria, the City of Blagoevgrad, the Open Society Institute, and the University of Maine. AUBG promotes American educational and cultural values and the university's office of security provides 24-hour protection to students, faculty, staff, property, and VIP guests. The AUBG security office cooperates fully with legal authorities, and the policies the office enforces are binding for the whole AUBG community. They are consistent with both Bulgarian and United States laws and with established guidelines for campus security. The most challenging policies are those that are new and unfamiliar to the Bulgarian and southeast European communities and therefore difficult for them to accept and adopt: sexual offense policy, drug abuse and alcohol policy, and weapon possession and use. As a center of pro-American influence and the site of international meetings, AUBG is subject to threats, student demonstrations, and other serious attacks on life and property. AUBG has developed a number of anti-terrorism plans and evacuation plans applicable to bomb threats and other extreme situations that might endanger human life.
