BJS Releases Prisons Report Series: Preliminary Data Release, 2023
The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, today released Prisons Report Series: Preliminary Data Release, 2023. The online release provides key prison statistics prior to release of the annual prisons report.
BJS is providing preliminary statistics on key items from the annual prisons data collection. The statistics include all incarcerated individuals under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities and those sentenced to more than 1 year under the same authorities. This preliminary release includes counts from 2013 through 2023 and a year-to-year comparison of 2022 and 2023 by jurisdiction and the sex of persons who were incarcerated. Final statistics will be published in Prisoners in 2023 – Statistical Tables (forthcoming).
