BJS Releases 2023 Preliminary Jails Data

The Bureau of Justice Statistics, a program office within the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, today released the 2023 Preliminary Data Release of the Jails Report Series. The online release provides preliminary data on jails in 2023. This is the second annual release in a series that publishes preliminary data ahead of the release of the report on jails.

BJS is providing preliminary statistics on key items from the annual jail data collection. These jail statistics include the number of inmates held in local jails by inmate demographics and conviction status, the number of admissions to jail, and jail incarceration rates, between 2013 and 2023. Final statistics will be published in Jail Inmates in 2023 – Statistical Tables (forthcoming).
