This handbook describes a sample of youth crime prevention initiatives.
Abstract
These case studies, which vary considerably in terms of their objectives, approach, and funding, have been classified into three groups: neighborhood-based youth initiatives supported by an outside unit or team, issue-based or specialist youth initiatives organized to address a concern such as drug misuse and racially motivated crime, and initiatives created by the police usually in conjunction with local schools. All projects have demonstrated that they can have an impact on local crime levels and/or reduce offending on the part of young people and/or strengthen local neighborhoods by preventing crime. These programs are innovative and inexpensive, capable of replication in other areas and of attracting sponsorship and funding, and committed to equal opportunities. 2 figures, 15 tables, and 8 references
