A delegation from the European Network of Policewomen attended the United National Fourth World Conference on Women and focused their report on the need to improve the relationship between women and the police, areas of concern to the police, and recommendations for police organizations.
Abstract
The conference was attended by 17,000 delegates; a forum for nongovernmental organizations had more than 30,000 participants. The conference's Platform for Action addressed 12 areas of major concern to women. Four of these with particular relevance to the police included (1) inequality between men and women in the sharing of power and decisionmaking at all levels, (2) the effects of armed conflicts or other conflicts on women, (3) the lack of awareness and commitment to internationally and nationally recognized women's human rights, and (4) violence against women. The conference confirmed that violence against women is a worldwide phenomenon, but it does not receive priority attention. The police worldwide must have an active part in combating violence against women; efforts must include prevention as well as improved care and advice to victims at all stages of the investigation. The European Network of Police believes that the establishment of a worldwide network of police will increase knowledge, expertise, and cooperation on this subject within police agencies.
