This transcript of the workshop presents the discussions of the relationship between crime rates and employment levels by a panel of distinguished economists and criminal justice researchers.
Abstract
The issues discussed include the findings of previous research, the limitations of aggregate data in the study of crime and employment, the explanatory power of models, and assessments of public programs directed at reducing crime by improving employment opportunities. The conferees agreed that current knowledge is not sufficient to provide adequate testing of hypotheses about the alleged link between crime and unemployment. (Editor summary modified)
