The chapters of this anthology examine some of the key issues associated with violence at workplaces, with attention to issues related to the following topics: national and international trends and responses to workplace violence, the identification of and responses to at-risk groups, terrorism as a new type of workplace violence, bullying at work, and future directions.
Abstract
The four types of workplace violence identified are intrusive, external violence, including terrorism; consumer/client-related violence; staff-related violence; and organizational violence. One of the three chapters that discuss national and international trends and responses to workplace violence reports on a cross-national comparison of workplace violence and response strategies. A second chapter in this section focuses on organizational factors linked to psychological aggression in the workplace. The third chapter suggests strategies for reforming abusive organizations. Four chapters pertain to the identification of and responses to groups at-risk of committing or being victimized by some type of workplace violence. The at-risk groups discussed are health-care workers who abuse their patients, intimate partners whose abuse spills over into the workplace, employees of organizations who provide direct mental health services to victims of disasters, and aid workers who are abused by their humanitarian relief organizations. Three chapters focus on terrorism as a new type of workplace violence. The chapter discusses workplace factors that can fuel terrorist sentiments and behavior; the preparation, training, and support of human service workers in responding to terrorist attacks; and organizational preparedness and recovery in the event of a terrorist attack. Two chapters address bullying and computer-related harassment in the workplace. The concluding chapter considers future direction in countering workplace violence.
