This video uses narration, dramatizations, and graphics to profile the nature and costs of workplace violence, the design and implementation of a workplace violence-prevention program, and how to deal with a violent incident in the workplace.
Abstract
The video opens with a narrator explaining that violence in the workplace has become a serious threat to occupational safety, but among both employers and employees there is massive denial that it could happen to them. A paralyzed victim of workplace violence describes the details of a gunman's assault at her workplace, which resulted in her being wounded and paralyzed, while eight employees were killed. The incident is dramatized as she describes in detail what happened. The body of the video explains and dramatizes the steps in an employer's development of a violence prevention program. Steps are assessments of the likelihood of violence on the job, the attitudes of employees toward the threat of workplace violence, and facility security; the development of policies and procedures for identifying the warning signs of potential violence and responding to it; and a training program for employees that will prepare them to participate in the violence-prevention program. The operation of the prevention program is based in a team composed of a cross- section of employees. This team coordinates and monitors the prevention program's operation. The operation of a comprehensive violence prevention program is dramatized, and steps in responding to a violent incident after it has occurred are described.
