Working With Clergy and Congregations for Alcohol Problem Prevention

NCJ Number

Annotation
This manual is intended to provide a basic reference source for use by alcohol and drug abuse prevention practitioners as well as leaders and members of religious organizations in developing, implementing, or assessing community-based programs involving the clergy and congregations in the prevention of alcohol problems.
Abstract
The guidelines are based on the experience of several prevention programs in California in which Catholic or Protestant churches were involved. They emphasize that working effectively with a variety of congregations and clergy requires both sensitivity to the diversity of religious beliefs and traditions and an understanding of the role of churches and synagogues as important social organizations. Individual sections explain the benefits of involvement, the obstacles to working with organized religion, motives for involvement, avenues of involvement, and specific questions and issues to address.
