This report summarizes the work of the Center for International Crime Prevention of the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention of the Secretariat of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in the year preceding the Commission’s ninth session to be held in Vienna, Austria, in April 2000.
Abstract
The report notes that the increasing challenges of transnational crime and corruption require the center to assume a central role in facilitating and coordinating international cooperation in addressing transnational crime, in addition to its traditional activities such as standard setting and information exchange, the Center has continued to support the function of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program as a global policy forum. In addition, progress has occurred toward developing a convention against transnational organized crime. Additional efforts have focused on trafficking in human beings, corruption, and the use and application of United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice. Further efforts have concerned terrorism prevention and collecting and disseminating information related to crime trends and the operations of criminal justice systems. Table and figure
