The Swedish Prison and Probation Administration conducted this study to determine various attitudes and special needs of female inmates.
Abstract
Replies to a 49-item questionnaire were obtained from 119 female inmates housed in several types of prisons. The findings showed that property and drug offenses accounted for 63 percent of the crimes committed by these female inmates. Many of the women smoked and 58 respondents believed they had a drug abuse problem. Of these, 35 wanted help from the prison for their drug dependence. Occupational activities in which the women engaged while incarcerated included work, study, and leisure. The women assessed their prison experience in terms of incidents of harassment, threats, and violence, and the facilities' general social climate. Other topics addressed by the survey included the women's previous experience of imprisonment and issues related to children of female inmates.
