AN HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF THE USE OF POLICEWOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES AND FOREIGN COUNTRIES IS PROVIDED, AND THE OBSTACLES CONFRONTING WOMEN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
IN REVIEWING THE HISTORY OF POLICEWOMEN IN AMERICA, THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE ROLE AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF WOMEN IN FEDERAL AGENCIES, STATE POLICE, PRIVATE SECURITY AGENCIES, AND LOCAL POLICE FORCES. THE EXPERIENCES OF POLICEWOMEN ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO THE SELECTION PROCESS, TRAINING, BENEFITS, ATTITUDES OF OTHERS, HAZARDOUS DUTY AND SUPERVISION. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS SUCH AS UNIFORMS, PERSONNEL TURNOVER, SEX AND ROMANCE, AND LEGAL GUIDELINES ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. IN MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE UTILIZATION OF POLICEWOMEN, THE AUTHOR CALLS FOR THE END OF SEXUAL DISCRIMINATION IN POLICE AGENCIES. ESCERPTS OF INTERVIEWS WITH POLICEWOMEN ARE INCORPORATED WITH THE AUTHOR'S COMMENTARY THROUGHOUT THE TEXT. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
