The effects of domestic violence on children and adolescents and the importance of child protection were examined at an October 1993 hearing before the Senate Subcommittee on Children, Family, Drugs, and Alcoholism.
Abstract
The opening speaker at the hearing noted that 3 to 4 million women are beaten each year by their husbands or partners and that children who witness trauma to their mothers may have psychological and behavioral problems. Other speakers discussed the Child Safety Act (S.870), the Domestic Violence Community Initiative Act (S.1572), programs and projects to serve children of battered women and child victims of domestic violence, the link between domestic violence and child abuse, the cycle of violence and its effects on children, child custody and visitation disputes, child witnesses in domestic violence cases, and the position of the American Medical Association on domestic violence.
