This article describes the philosophy and treatment methods of the St. Francis General Hospital's Adolescent Chemical Dependency Unit in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Abstract
Referrals to the program are principally from parents, courts, and schools. The program acts as a therapeutic community which imposes external controls that help develop patients' internal controls. The treatment approach includes patient responsibility, an 'open-door' communication system, and family and patient involvement in decisionmaking. The developmental issues of emancipation, sexuality, socialization, vocation, and ego identity are explored. Contracts initiate the treatment, based on a thorough assessment, and are used to monitor progress. In emphasizing ego restructuring and behavioral change, the program uses individual, group, and family psychotherapy; education, occupational, and recreational therapy; and Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Treatment progress is marked by the patient's ability to develop mental and emotional resources that provide satisfactions and behavioral directions that preclude drug dependence. An aftercare program uses the resources of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous, school counselors, and peer group support. 9 references.
