For many years, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas has operated Camp Woodland Springs, a residential program for boys with serious emotional handicaps. At the time this book was written, after 46 years of operation, the camp had served over 600 boys, 70 percent of whom had made satisfactory adjustment in the post-camp period and another 24 percent of whom had improved enough to function at a significantly higher level.
Abstract
The boys, aged 6 to 16, are referred to the program by schools, social service agencies, psychiatric clinics, and private physicians. This book discusses the operational aspects of the program including the physical setting, intake procedures, personnel, spiritual values, the role of parents and counselors, the role of the caseworkers, and follow-up. It outlines the educational component of the program and describes the group structure of the camp which centers on a group work process, problem solving, group support, and the emergence of group values. The chapter on therapy examines the role of the group, the acquisition of skills, goal-directed behavior, and some positive aspects of treatment. Finally, the book covers counselor selection and training, and the role of the Salesmanship Club to the camp.
