This article looks at the new generation of police recruits, known as the millennial generation, and the effects these millennials have on the need to improve training academies’ in the advancements of technologies, new learning modalities, and increased interactivity.
Abstract
The millennial generation of police officers is a unique generation with different learning styles, expectations, and more increased technological proficiencies than the generation preceding them. The millennials are those who came of age in the 1990s when the technology revolution exploded and are therefore extremely technologically sophisticated. The millennials are those attending the police academies in the future years of the new millennium. These police recruits represent the future for academies and what the millennial generation will demand is the highest level of instruction. They have grown up during the technology-driven years and have high expectations. The advancement of technologies, new learning modalities, and increased interactivity in the academies will create a more finished product (i.e., highly trained officers) ready to protect and serve. 15 notes
