This article provides an overview of the President's National Service Plan.
Abstract
This Plan will offer Americans opportunities to serve the country and receive awards to pay for postgraduate education. Localities, associations, and other entities seeking National Service positions will develop programs that will meet important unmet needs, provide skills to participants, and not displace existing workers. The public safety component of National Service will include opportunities for participants in police agencies (sworn and nonsworn), as well as nonsworn opportunities in the courts, prosecutors' offices, community and institutional corrections, treatment, community-based organizations, and victim services. Prospective assignments for National Service Officers were suggested by: police practitioners, court administrators, prosecutors, judges, victim assistance providers, and community and institutional corrections personnel.
