This manual presents a curriculum for high school students designed to teach them about the constitutional right to trial by jury.
Abstract
This right, guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, allows Americans to have their civil and criminal cases heard not by government officials, but by peers within the community, and provides citizens with the opportunity and responsibility to render a public service. The curriculum allows students to explore the reasons behind the concept of jury, voir dire, rules of evidence, and jury decision making, culminating in the verdict. The curriculum contains excerpts from actual court cases, and outlines activities for students, including participation in a mock jury trial. 2 appendixes
