Abstract
The first section explains what drugs are, how and why drug use starts, and the physical and psychological consequences of alcohol and other drug abuse. The next section provides suggestions and guidelines for how to prevent alcohol and other drug problems among family and friends. The focus is on early education and how to prevent problems before they start. Readers will also learn how to set an example for those close to them and how to teach children to resist pressure to use alcohol and other drugs. Another section explains how to determine whether someone close to you is having problems with alcohol or other drugs. It explains not only what to do to help but also what not to do. The concluding section provides a list of Federal, State, and private organizations that can provide assistance in countering drug problems.
