Information technology has the potential to revolutionize law enforcement practices and procedures, and its impact on the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) patrol function is assessed
Abstract
Like all other police agencies, the LAPD faces several challenges with respect to information technology, such as what systems to acquire, how to adapt systems to police department needs, and how to integrate systems into the existing technological environment. A panel used the nominal group technique to study the impact of information technology on the LAPD patrol function. The panel compiled two prioritized lists of 10 trends and 11 events, and a scenario was developed to guide future strategic planning for information technology. The analysis illustrated the potentially positive impact of computers and related advanced technologies on the police patrol function in Los Angeles. Recommendations to facilitate the effective use of information technology by police departments are offered. 2 endnotes
