THESE TAPED PROCEEDINGS PRESENT DISCUSSIONS ON WHICH ASPECTS OF CHILD ABUSE TREATMENT WORK TO STOP AND REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CASES OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT.
Abstract
A REPRESENTATIVE OF URBAN AND RURAL SYSTEMS ASSOCIATES OUTLINED THE DYNAMICS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF CHILDREN AS THEY CORRELATE WITH TREATMENT TECHNIQUES. SUCCESSFUL ALLEVIATION OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT IS CONTINGENT UPON INTERVENTION AT THE PRESCHOOL LEVEL, WITH THE AID OF SUCH FACILITIES AS THERAPEUTIC NURSERIES, CRISIS NURSERIES, DAY CARE CENTERS, AND DROP-IN CENTERS. A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN, TALKED ABOUT MODEL PROGRAMS AND THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES ACROSS VARIOUS ETHNIC AND CULTURAL POPULATIONS, CONTRASTING ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH ABUSE AND NEGLECT WHEN A CHILD'S CARE IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILTY OF THE FAMILY WITH THOSE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH INSTITUTIONAL AND SOCIAL SYSTEM INVOLVEMENT. THE LARGEST PROBLEM FOR TREATMENT OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT CASES IS HOW TO ALTER THE DYNAMICS OF THE FAMILY PROCESS AND STILL INSURE CARE AND PROTECTION FOR THE CHILD. A PHYSICIAN FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE DISCUSSED WAYS TO PREVENT ABUSE BEFORE IT OCCURS AND HOW TO STOP IT ONCE IT HAS STARTED. CHILD ABUSERS TEND TO FALL INTO FOUR TYPES OF LIFE STYLES, VALUES, CHOICES, AND EXPERIENCES; THE TYPES OF TREATMENT WHICH SEEM TO WORK BEST FOR EACH GROUP ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS STRESSED THAT IN ORDER TO CONTROL CHILD ABUSE, ACTION MUST BE TAKEN TO HELP PEOPLE CONTROL THEIR ANGER SO THEY DO NOT LASH OUT AT THEIR CHILDREN. (BAC)
