This section of the "Strategic Planning Master Notebook" contains two OJJDP Juvenile Justice Bulletins that discuss topics related to juvenile community-based aftercare programs.
Abstract
One bulletin is entitled "Implementation of the Intensive Community-Based Aftercare Program." In 1987, the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) established a research and demonstration program to develop, assess, and disseminate an intensive aftercare program that targeted serious, chronic juvenile offenders. This program, the Intensive Aftercare Program (IAP), aims to reduce recidivism among high-risk juvenile parolees by providing a continuum of supervision and services during institutionalization and after release. This bulletin provides an overview of the IAP model and describes its implementation over the first 3 years by participating sites in Colorado, Nevada, New Jersey, and Virginia. The bulletin also assesses the extent to which the implementation has been successful and identifies the factors that facilitated implementation and those that impeded it. The second bulletin is entitled, "Reintegration, Supervised Release, and Intensive Aftercare." It describes an intensive juvenile aftercare model developed from a long-term OJJDP research initiative and compares it with other approaches. An analysis of intensive aftercare programs is also offered in the context of the publication of the University of Maryland report, "Preventing Crime: What Works, What Doesn't, What's Promising." References and tables accompany the bulletins.
