This report from the Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO) provides access to information from the field of Weed and Seed and includes stories from successful Weed and Seed sites about the National Guard helping to make a difference in the lives of youth, reentry programs addressing local populations, community policing and urban renewal working together to revive a neighborhood, and more.
Abstract
Weed and Seed success stories are presented in the areas of law enforcement, community policing, prevention, neighborhood restoration, reentry, and American Indian/Alaska Native. Highlights of these stories from various programs working to prevent crime and provide safer communities within the Weed and Seed strategy include: (1) the Minneapolis Police Department’s new ShotSpotter gunfire detection system (a gunfire location system using sound sensors located on existing telephone or utility poles to detect and identify their position within 40 feet); (2) the Ferguson Road Initiative (FRI) in Dallas, TX which developed a bilingual Crime Watch toolkit to meet the specific challenge in organizing Spanish-speaking neighborhoods; (3) the Department of the Navy establishment of the Weed and Seed strategy’s Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) program working to equip children from at-risk neighborhoods with the tools to resist drugs, gangs, and alcohol; (4) the Individual Development Accounts (IDA) Demonstration project developed through a partnership focusing on home ownership and the impact of a geographically concentrated asset-building strategy on community stability and neighborhood revitalization; (5) the Sunnyside Weed and Seed site in Flagstaff, AZ co-sponsoring the first job fair in the Coconino Adult Detention Facility; and (6) a 3-day tribal training and technical assistance session in Phoenix, AZ presented by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs aimed at improving law enforcement and criminal justice in Indian Country. This report, from the Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO), presents and offers the stories of Weed and Seed strategies implemented across the United States that have been effective in crime prevention and community safety.
