This guide profiles Federal resources that are available to provide technical assistance in various program areas that may be part of a Weed-and-Seed strategy in a local site.
Abstract
Operation Weed and Seed is a federally initiated and monitored strategy that assists and oversees local sites committed to the Weed-and-Seed goals of preventing, controlling, and reducing violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country. The general strategy involves "weeding out" violent and drug-abusing criminals to prevent them from returning to the targeted neighborhoods and "seeding" those neighborhoods with resources and services that address the causes of violence, drug abuse, and criminal gangs. In describing the Federal resources that are available to Weed-and-Seed sites, this guide categorizes the resources under the topics of law enforcement/community policing; prevention, intervention, and treatment; and neighborhood revitalization. Under these broad categories, resources are profiled for program subcategories. Under law enforcement/community policing, for example, Federal resources are described for programs related to child protection, community crime prevention, drug enforcement assistance, emergency preparedness, and gangs. Examples of program resources for prevention, intervention, and treatment include afterschool and youth safe-haven activities, assistance to low-income families, education, and faith-based/community-based organizations. Neighborhood revitalization resources encompass program categories that pertain to economic development, environmental issues, housing, job development, and transportation. A keyword index assists users by listing all of the programmatic categories for which there is Federal technical assistance. Resource information includes the listing of Web site URL's.
