This article describes using web sites to provide information to the public and to law enforcement and other agencies.
Abstract
The Seminole County, FL, web site informs the public of safety issues in their neighborhoods. The site contains criminal activity maps that show what areas are being hit with property theft and damage and where drug arrests have been made. The site has links to others' Web sites, including the FBI, the White House, and the U.S. Department of Justice. One of the most actively used areas of the Web site is the press and community release portion, which helps to put crime prevention and crime fighting information into the hands of the public. The Web site has an extensive registry of traveling criminals that includes data sent in from other law enforcement agencies around the country and throughout the world. In addition to the public site, the county also maintains a site for law enforcement personnel locally, nationally, and internationally. The site, which is password-protected, has all of the information that is on the public site, but also contains more private information about felons.
