A DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATIONS AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY PROBATION DEPARTMENT'S VOLUNTEERS IN PROBATION (VIP) PROGRAM, WITH CASE STUDIES.
Abstract
THE VIP PROGRAM CURRENTLY INVOLVES ALMOST 1,000 VOLUNTEERS. VOLUNTEERS ARE ASSIGNED ON A ONE-TO-ONE BASIS TO INDIVIDUAL PROBATIONERS. THROUGH RESPONSIBLE REPORTING AND RECOMMENDATIONS BY ASSIGNED VOLUNTEERS, THE PROBATION DEPARTMENT IS ADVISED OF THE PROGRESSIVE ADJUSTMENT OF THESE CLIENTS. IN THEIR INTENSIVE WORK WITH PROBATIONERS, VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE TUTORING, COUNSELING, CULTURAL ENRICHMENT, RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES, AND ROLE MODELS. SEVERAL CASE HISTORIES IN WHICH THE VIP SUCCESSFULLY WORKED WITH A PROBATIONER AND ACHIEVED EARLY TERMINATION OF PROBATION ARE PRESENTED. ISSUES IN TRAINING, SUPERVISION, AND STAFF-VOLUNTEER COOPERATION ARE ALSO REVIEWED.
