An inventory to evaluate educational interventions regarding violence in relationships is discussed.
Abstract
This article describes a study conducted to develop an inventory to measure early adolescents' knowledge and attitudes about abuse in intimate relationships. The inventory was developed through a review process using a national jury of experts in domestic violence, child abuse and/or child development, and tested for reliability with seventh-grade health education students. It is based on other inventories and is intended for use with Skills for Violence-Free Relationships curriculum. The purpose of the inventory was to evaluate educational interventions regarding violence in relationships. Gender differences were noted and additional findings were reported. Limitations of the inventory are that it is a self-report tool, involves predominantly European American seventh-grade health education students in one middle school in a small Midwestern city, and the validity determination is limited to one particular curriculum. The inventory, therefore, may not be generalizable to other ages, samples, or curricula. Recommendations for the further establishment of a valid and reliable inventory are presented. Appendixes include a listing of the jury members with addresses, an inventory rating scale, and an inventory used for reliability testing. References
