This report, which is pertinent to the prevention of violence in Massachusetts schools, addresses legal updates on school discipline, a coordinated school and community response to group and gang violence, and the prevention of sexual harassment and dating violence in school.
Abstract
The legal updates on school discipline address search and seizure in the schools, student discipline policies in the Framingham public schools, a memorandum of understanding in the Somerville public schools, and the juvenile diversion program of the Essex County District Attorney's Office. Seven papers by various authors focus on a coordinated school and community response to group and gang violence. Among the issues considered are gangs as a community problem; the Flying Squad, a Chicago program to counter street gangs; how to keep kids out of gangs; and the Attorney General's Memorandum on the use of the Civil Rights Act to combat gang violence. Remaining papers on group and gang violence include a summary of Massachusetts civil rights statutes, a description of the Attorney General's Student Conflict Resolution Experts Program, and statewide community crisis response teams. Seven papers on the prevention of sexual harassment and dating violence in school include a three-session curriculum for teaching adolescents, curricula for dating violence prevention programs, and the urge for power as a factor in date rape. A sample sexual harassment policy crafted by the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents is also included. Supplemental materials are provided.
