Abstract
The book includes complete articles and speeches, long book excerpts, and occasional cartoons and boxed quotations presenting opposing viewpoints in response to the following questions: (1) Is Violence a Serious Problem in America? (2) What Causes Violence? (3) How Serious a Problem Is Domestic Violence? (4) How Should Youth Violence Be Addressed? and (5) What Policies Would Reduce Violence? Within these five major categories, the book addresses: media exaggeration of violence; violence in the workplace; youth violence; contributions to violence from genetics, breakdown of families, lack of moral purpose, the criminal justice system, the drug trade, and capitalism; violence against men and against women; the battered woman syndrome; trying juveniles as adults; conflict resolution programs; punishment as a way of reducing school violence; and violence reduction policies featuring a public health approach, anticrime measures, increased gun control, or increased incarceration.
