This document reports results of two surveys to collect data on victims of violent crime recorded by police forces in England and Wales during the period 1990 to 1994.
Abstract
The offenses covered were violence against the person, rape, indecent assault and buggery, and robbery and theft from the person. The police were asked to provide information on characteristics of the offenses such as the age of the victim, relationship of victim to suspect, and location of the offense. Total violent crime and theft from the person accounted for about 6 percent of all offenses recorded by the police in 1990-1994. Almost two-thirds of victims were male, and the majority of victims were between 16 and 39 years old. The risk of rape for females was highest across the 10-24 age range, at just under 60 victimizations per 100,000 population. Seven out of 10 male victims of indecent assault and about half of female victims were aged under 16. Almost 60 percent of robbery and theft victims were male. Figures, tables, notes
