Annotation

Data from the National Crime Survey (victimization survey) for 26 large cities in 1974 and 1975 indicate victim and offender characteristics and offense types for school crime.

Abstract

Data were obtained for offenses which respondents indicated occurred inside a school. Statistics on types of crimes are presented separately for student and teacher victims. Data on each offense type is broken down by number of perpetrators and whether the offenses were committed by strangers or nonstrangers. Data on robberies of teachers and students are presented by the gender and race of victims and offenders and by whether the robberies were committed by intruders or students. Similar data are provided for aggravated assault. A table also shows victim responses (reported to police or someone else) by offense type and victim status (student, teacher, or other). Data indicate the percent of teachers abused (curses or obscene gestures and threats to hurt) by students in schools over 1 month in 1976. The study also discusses how these offenses against persons and other offenses in schools, such as vandalism, collectively victimize the school. 12 tables.
