This document provides information and ideas on how victim-oriented policing services can promote community-oriented policing strategies.
Abstract
This guide is a resource for law enforcement personnel undergoing a training program to implement some of the methods of performing victim services and community policing. The purpose is to help community-oriented officers gain the skills of professional victim advocates to better manage their interactions with people in distress. Chapter 1 provides an introduction and overview of community policing and victim assistance concepts. Chapter 2 discusses the trauma of victimization. Chapter 3 focuses on crisis intervention and the patrol officer. Chapter 4 provides information on victim rights and law enforcement responsibilities. Chapter 5 discusses working with victim assistance professionals in the community. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 focus on working with sexual assault victims, domestic violence victims, and survivors of homicide victims. Chapter 9 details the law enforcement response to victims of bias crime. Chapters 10 and 11 discuss working with elderly crime victims and child victims, respectively. Chapter 12 focuses on law enforcement officer stress. 3 appendices
