Since vehicle stop confrontations result in at least one-third of the fatalities to law enforcement officers, this text was developed to improve tactical procedures and safety strategies.
Abstract
The text focuses on contemporary procedures perfected through practice and performance by thousands of police officers in the field. It is intended to help preservice and inservice officers reduce complacency and risk. The text begins with a description of preliminary procedures to help officers perceive, assess, and react to risk. Fundamental procedures to guide officers in vehicle stops are detailed that focus on emergency equipment, dispatch update, squad car positioning, approach options, squad car exits, and violator contact. The text also includes procedural information on high-risk vehicles, resistant subjects, and forcible stop techniques. Photographs and illustrations accompany the narrative material.
