THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE EXTENT OF SCHOOL VANDALISM, CAUSES OF THE GROWTH OF VANDALISM IN AMERICAN SCHOOLS, AND SUGGESTIONS FOR DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM.
Abstract
THIRTEEN CAUSES OF SCHOOL VANDALISM ARE CITED INCLUDING THE BREAKDOWN OF FAMILY AND FAMILY CONTROL, DRUG ABUSE, ANONYMITY IN THE SCHOOL AND NEIGHBORHOOD, TEACHER APATHY, AND PARENTAL IGNORANCE OR INDIFFERENCE. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING THE SCHOOL VANDALISM SITUATION INCLUDE THE ENACTMENT BY CONGRESS OF LEGISLATION SIMILAR TO THE SAFE SCHOOLS ACT WHICH WOULD PROVIDE MONEY FOR THE TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT OF SCHOOL SECURITY OFFICERS, COURT SENTENCES OF INCARCERATION FOR PROVEN ACTS OF VANDALISM, AND CURRICULUM REFORM AND TRAINING IN HUMAN RELATIONS TO REDIRECT NEGATIVE SCHOOL ATTITUDES. IT IS ALSO SUGGESTED THAT INTENSIVE EFFORTS BE MADE BY SCHOOL STAFF TO STRESS TO STUDENTS THAT THEY HAVE A VESTED INTEREST IN PREVENTING VANDALISM.
